The forge we found — Crow Mountain, Northeast Alabama

We bought this ground on Crow Mountain a few years back, and like anyone who buys land in Northeast Alabama, we spent the first several months doing what you’re supposed to do — walking every inch of it. Most of it’s what you’d expect. Ridgeline, hardwoods, a couple of fence lines somebody put up and gave up on decades before we ever showed up. But the back of the property doesn’t just slope. It drops. Straight down into a ravine, rock walls on both sides, the kind of holler where the temperature falls ten degrees the second you climb down into it and the light goes with it.

That’s where we found the cave. Not deep, not dramatic — the kind of overhang that’s kept people and livestock dry since before anybody was writing things down. But somebody had used it for more than shelter. There was a forge back in there. A real one. Fieldstone, blackened with generations of smoke, a busted bellows frame, chunks of coal still scattered across the floor like whoever left didn’t plan on being gone long. Rusted tool heads with no handles left on them. Slag and iron scrap, some of it too corroded to tell what it used to be.

We still don’t know exactly who worked that forge, or when. Some of what we’ve found dates back to the Civil War era, near as we and a couple of old-timers in the county can figure, but a forge like that doesn’t get used once. It gets used for a hundred years by however many hands needed it — farmers patching plow parts, somebody keeping a still running quiet enough that revenue men wouldn’t come looking, maybe just a man who didn’t want to ride into town every time a tool broke. Mountain people didn’t waste trips, and they sure didn’t waste iron.

We’ve had enough people hear it independent of each other that we’ve stopped writing it off as the pipes settling or a limb knocking somewhere. Could be the rock walls doing something strange with sound off the creek. Could be something else. Either way, we don’t go down there after dark anymore, and if you ever get invited to, you should probably say you’ve got somewhere to be.

We didn’t set out to build a business around a ghost story. But you don’t stumble across something like that and walk away unaffected. There’s a straight line, even if it’s a strange one, between a man working iron in a cave by firelight because it needed doing, and what we’re doing now in the shop up above that same ravine — different fire, different tools, a laser instead of a hammer, but the same idea underneath it. Something gets made. It gets made with care. And it’s built to outlast whoever made it, same as those old tool heads outlasted the man who dropped them.

That’s where the name comes from, and that’s what we mean when we say distinction forged into every piece. We’re not blacksmiths. We’re not claiming a lineage we can’t prove. But we work this mountain, we found what was left by whoever worked it before us, and we’d like to think they’d recognize the intent even if the tools would confuse the hell out of them.
